The first achievement and excitement is when your little one can read a digital clock, sometimes it's not always a great thing because then they know they are going to bed early etc. The next step is to get kids to tell the time from an analogue watch, although there is no rush I know my kids love looking at the big clock we have in our house with great interest.
As with a lot of learning, there is always a tool to help kids learn a new skill. I discovered the EasyRead time teacher, with a fabulous design to teach kids a fun and EASY way to learn the time!
The EasyRead is bright and colourful, so kids are happy to wear it and it comes with a choice of watch band colours. My 6 year old son was eager to wear it straight away and caught hold of the concept very quickly, from having never worn a watch before. I knew he had learnt to read the time when his digital clock radio in his bedroom wasn't working and he yelled out to me "it's 10 past 7 Mum" and I thought "he's got it"!
If you tell your kids they only have to remember three things and then they can tell the time, it's pretty straight forward. The key is remembering and reminding them about the three steps as follows:
1 - Read the number at the end of the long hand;
2 - Say which side the long hand is pointing to (to or past);
3 - Read the number at the end of the short hand.........and that's all
So they say it like '10 to 7' or '20 past 8'.
After a few practices and a few days of wearing the watch, my son was very proud to be telling me the time. It took a few goes, but once he remembered the long hand was first to read we were all smooth sailing.
Excuse the bed hair and pyjama's - but this is the watch in action!
The watch face is large and it can fit a wrist up to the size of a small adult. The fabric band is washable, so perfect for kids! Easy Read also offer a clock with the same set up, so perfect for the bedroom or perhaps to help in the classroom!
